Introduction to Cidnavir Injection

Cidnavir Injection is an antiviral drug that belongs to the category of purine nucleosides, containing the active ingredient Cidofovir. It is used to treat Cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS. It is a serious opportunistic infection that can occur in individuals with AIDS. It affects the retina of the eye and can lead to vision impairment if left untreated.

Contact your physician immediately if you experience allergies to this drug and its ingredients. If you get pain, redness, itching of the eye, or changes in your vision, tell your doctor promptly. This drug should be cautiously used if you have diabetes mellitus because there may be an increased risk of developing low eye pressure (ocular hypotony). You will need to have your eyes and blood counts tested regularly.

Discuss the contraceptive options with your doctor before starting this treatment if there is a possibility that you may become pregnant. Women should use reliable birth control during treatment and at least six months after the last dose. Avoid breastfeeding your baby while on the medicine, as it is unknown if the Cidnavir injection passes into the breast milk. Talk to your doctor if you take any other medications before using over-the-counter or herbal products. Your doctor will evaluate the risk of interaction with this medication.

Uses of Cidnavir Injection

  • Treatment of Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infections
  • Prevention of CMV Retinitis
  • Management of CMV Infections in Transplant Patients
  • Treatment of Severe Viral Infections
  • Adjunct Therapy in Immunocompromised Conditions

Therapeutic Effects of Cidnavir Injection

Cidnavir Injection is an antiviral medication primarily used to treat and prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals such as organ transplant recipients and patients with HIV/AIDS. It works by inhibiting the replication of the virus, reducing the viral load, and preventing disease progression. By effectively controlling CMV, Cidnavir Injection helps lower the risk of complications such as CMV retinitis, which can lead to vision loss and systemic infections that may affect multiple organs. Its therapeutic effects contribute to better overall health outcomes in high-risk patients by reducing the severity and recurrence of CMV-related conditions.

Interaction of Cidnavir Injection with other drugs

Cidnavir Injection may interact with various medications, potentially altering its effectiveness or increasing the risk of adverse effects. Key drug interactions include:

  • Nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides, amphotericin B, NSAIDs): May increase the risk of kidney damage when used together.
  • Probenecid: Can reduce the elimination of Cidnavir, leading to increased drug levels and potential toxicity.
  • Zidovudine (AZT): Co-administration may increase the risk of blood-related side effects, such as anaemia and neutropenia.
  • Immunosuppressants (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus): Combined use can heighten the risk of kidney toxicity and immune suppression.
  • Other antivirals (e.g., ganciclovir, valganciclovir): May lead to additive toxicity, particularly affecting the bone marrow and kidneys.

More Information about Cidnavir Injection

  • Store Cidnavir injection below 25°C
  • Do not refrigerate or freeze.
  • Keep it out of reach from children.
  • Do not use the injection if it contains visible particulate matter.

How to consume Cidnavir Injection

Cidnavir Injection should be administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional. It is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion over a specific duration, as prescribed by the doctor. The dosage and frequency depend on the patient's medical condition, kidney function, and response to treatment. Adequate hydration before and after administration is recommended to minimize the risk of kidney toxicity. It is essential to follow the healthcare provider’s instructions carefully and not to self-administer the injection.
