Introduction

Intacept 50mg Injection contains the active ingredient Etanercept. It is commercially known as Enbrel and is a potent TNF inhibitor utilised to treat various autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder characterised by chronic inflammation of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and potential joint deformity. Psoriatic arthritis is an inflammatory joint condition occurring in some individuals with psoriasis, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Ankylosing spondylitis is a type of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, causing pain, stiffness, and potential fusion of the vertebrae, leading to reduced flexibility. Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is a group of chronic arthritic conditions affecting children under 16, causing joint inflammation, pain, and potential damage.

Intacept 50mg Injection suppresses the immune system's overactive response and reduces inflammation, effectively improving the symptoms of these chronic inflammatory diseases. While this medication has demonstrated remarkable efficacy in managing these conditions, it is not without potential side effects, which may include injection site reactions, infections, headaches, and allergic reactions. When used in specific populations, Intacept 50mg Injection can be prescribed for pediatric and elderly patients. It is approved for use in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and, when appropriately administered, can be beneficial for managing symptoms in older adults with autoimmune diseases. However, as with any medication, cautious monitoring and individualised treatment plans are essential for pediatric and elderly patients to optimise safety and effectiveness.

Uses

Intacept 50mg Injection is used to treat the following:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis

  • Plaque psoriasis

  • Psoriatic arthritis

  • Ankylosing spondylitis

  • Juvenile idiopathic arthritis

  • Non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis

How Intacept 50mg Injection Works

Intacept 50mg Injection's mechanism of action involves inhibition of tumour necrosis factor (TNF). By binding to circulating TNF-alpha and acting as a decoy receptor, this medication disrupts the inflammatory signalling pathway, suppressing immune cell activation and reducing the production of inflammatory cytokines. This neutralisation of TNF-alpha effectively mitigates inflammation, making it highly effective.

Interaction of Intacept 50mg Injection with other drugs

Methotrexate: Using Intacept 50mg Injection with methotrexate may increase the risk of serious infections, although this combination is sometimes prescribed in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis under close medical supervision.

Anakinra: Combining Intacept 50mg Injection with anakinra is generally not recommended, as it can raise the risk of severe infections and neutropenia.

Abatacept: Taking Intacept 50mg Injection along with abatacept may increase the chance of infections and is usually avoided.

Cyclophosphamide: Concurrent use of Intacept 50mg Injection with cyclophosphamide may raise the risk of malignancies and serious infections.

Live vaccines: Live vaccines such as MMR vaccine, BCG vaccine, and Varicella vaccine should be avoided during treatment with Intacept 50mg Injection, as the immune response may be weakened.

Corticosteroids: Medicines like Prednisolone used together with Intacept 50mg Injection may further suppress the immune system, increasing infection risk.

Sulfasalazine: Co-administration with Sulfasalazine may lead to a reduction in white blood cell counts in some patients.

Other biologic DMARDs: Combining Intacept 50mg Injection with biologics like Infliximab or Adalimumab is not advised because of increased immunosuppression.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at room temperature, between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C)

  • Keep away from moisture, heat, and light.

  • It should not be frozen.

  • Keep away from children and pets.

How to consume Intacept 50mg Injection

Intacept 50mg Injection can be administered via subcutaneous injection and intravenous infusion. The choice of administration route depends on the patient's condition, preferences, and the healthcare provider's recommendation, both of which have been proven effective in treating autoimmune diseases.
