Introduction to Xcel 25mg Tablet

Xcel 25mg tablet is an anticancer drug with the active ingredient Exemestane. It belongs to the medication class known as aromatase inhibitors. In postmenopausal women, it is used to treat hormone-dependent early breast cancer after completing 2-3 years of treatment with Tamoxifen. In addition, it also treats hormone-dependent advanced breast cancer.  Cancer is a disorder in which cells multiply in an uncontrolled and abnormal manner. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to Exemestane or any of the other ingredients of this medicine and if you have not been through the menopause stage, also if you think you are pregnant or breastfeeding. 

Xcel 25mg tablet is not recommended for adolescents and children under the age of 18. Inform your doctor before starting the treatment, if you have problems with your liver or kidney or if you have a history of the bone condition as this medicine can make you lose mineral content and decrease its strength. Inform your doctor if you take any other medicine while under this treatment. Regular checking will be conducted to monitor the vitamin D level, if your level is below normal you will be given vitamin D.  You need to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking recently before taking this medicine. Use effective birth control during the treatment with this medicine.

  • Breast cancer

Therapeutic Effects of Xcel 25mg Tablet

Xcel 25mg inhibits the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for the conversion of androgens (male hormones) to estrogen (female hormones). By inhibiting aromatase, Xcel 25mg reduces the levels of estrogen in the body. This can stop or reduce the growth of different hormone-sensitive breast cancer cells, which depends on estrogen. 

Interaction of Xcel 25mg Tablet with other drugs

Inform your healthcare provider about all your medicines, including prescribed medications, over-the-counter medicines, nutritional or vitamin supplements, and herbal products. Certain medications may interact such as Rifampicin, Carbamazepine, or phenytoin, and St. John Wort interacts with Xcel 25mg and reduce effectiveness by causing undesirable side effects.

How to consume Xcel 25mg Tablet

Side effects are unwanted symptoms produced by medication. Even though all medications cause side effects, not everyone gets them.

It is advised to inform your doctor if you have a history of liver or kidney diseases. Xcel 25mg reduces levels of the estrogen hormone. You can have weaker bones that are more likely to break. Do not get pregnant or breastfeed. Use effective contraception throughout the treatment.

Q 1. Can Xcel 25mg cause bone disease?

Xcel 25mg can weaken your bones and increase your risk of fractures (a condition called osteoporosis). Your provider might ask you to do a bone mineral density (BMD) test while taking this medicine to ensure that your bones are healthy and strong.

Q 2. Will it affect my contraception or fertility?

Xcel 25mg is generally given to you only if you have gone through menopause. However, some people find that they start to have periods again after taking Exemestane. If this happens to you, it’s important to use reliable contraception. Talk to your doctor if your periods start again or if there is any chance that you maybe are pregnant. Exemestane is not recommended during pregnancy.

Q 3. Can Xcel 25mg be used in men?

Xcel 25mg is not approved for use in men, as it is specifically designed to treat hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
