Telmisartan + Metoprolol is an anti-hypertensive drug. It contains a combination of Telmisartan and Metoprolol. Telmisartan belongs to the class of medications called angiotensin II receptor antagonists, and Metoprolol belongs to the group of medications called beta-blockers. The fixed-dose combination was approved by FDA in 1961.

Precautions

Before treatment with this medication, let your physician know if you are experiencing any allergic reaction to Telmisartan or Metoprolol and its ingredients. Report to your physician if you have kidney or severe liver diseases such as cholestasis or biliary obstruction (impairment of bile flow from the liver to the small intestine), heart problems, low blood pressure, diabetes, elevated potassium levels, renal artery stenosis (narrowing of blood vessels in the kidney), raised aldosterone levels, cardiogenic shock, phaeochromocytoma (tumor of adrenal glands) and planned for surgery. Hence, your doctor may regularly monitor your kidney function, blood pressure, and the number of electrolytes (potassium) in your blood at regular intervals. 

It is not recommended for children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Inform your doctor about any medicines you take or have taken before the treatment, including prescription, over-the-counter medicines, nutritional or vitamin supplements, and herbal products. certain medications may interact with telmisartan + metoprolol and cause undesirable side effects.

Side Effects

The common side effects of Telmisartan + Metoprolol are hypotension (low blood pressure), headache, tiredness, dizziness, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, shortness of breath, cold extremities, itchy skin, rashes, increased potassium level in the blood, vertigo (sudden internal or external spinning sensation). Other serious side effects are sepsis (blood infection), angioedema (swelling of skin and mucosa), and dizziness on standing up (orthostatic hypotension). 

Word Of Advice

Store in a dry and cool place and away from sunlight. Keep Telmisartan + Metoprolol out of sight and reach of children and pets. If you forgot to take the tablet, take your next dose at the scheduled time. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.  

It is suggested to monitor your blood pressure regularly to prevent hypotension. Get up slowly while rising from a lying or sitting position, as Telmisartan + Metoprolol may cause dizziness. Prolonged intake of this medication can cause an altered potassium level. So, regular monitoring of potassium is advised. If you undergo surgery, inform the doctor that you are taking this medicine. It is advised to restrict salt and fat intake in the diet.
