Introduction
Cernos Gel contains Testosterone 1% w/w as its active ingredient. It is a prescription hormonal medicine used in adult men with low or absent testosterone production due to certain medical conditions. It belongs to a class of medicines called androgens.
Cernos Gel is supplied as a 5 g tube and is applied directly to the skin. Testosterone is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. The treatment requires medical supervision and regular monitoring to check testosterone levels and assess the response to treatment.
Uses of Cernos Gel
Cernos Gel is used for:
Primary hypogonadism: A condition in which the testicles produce insufficient testosterone due to a congenital or acquired problem.
Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: A condition in which the hypothalamus or pituitary gland does not provide the hormonal signals needed for normal testosterone production.
The doctor determines whether Cernos Gel is appropriate based on symptoms, blood testosterone levels and the underlying cause of testosterone deficiency. The dose and duration of treatment are decided individually.
How Cernos Gel Works
Cernos Gel contains Testosterone, a hormone that binds to androgen receptors in the body. This activates processes involved in the development and maintenance of male sexual characteristics and other functions regulated by testosterone.
By replacing insufficient testosterone, Cernos Gel helps restore hormone levels towards the normal range and may improve symptoms associated with testosterone deficiency.
Interactions of Cernos Gel with Other Medicines
Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements you take. Certain medicines can interact with testosterone and may require additional monitoring.
Insulin and other diabetes medicines: Testosterone may affect blood glucose levels and reduce insulin requirements in some people with diabetes. Blood glucose levels may need closer monitoring.
Anticoagulants (blood-thinning medicines): Testosterone may alter the effects of anticoagulants such as warfarin. Your doctor may monitor blood clotting more frequently and adjust treatment if necessary.
Corticosteroids: Using testosterone with corticosteroids may increase fluid retention. This requires particular care in people with heart, kidney or liver conditions.
Other testosterone products or anabolic androgenic steroids: Combining these products may increase testosterone exposure and the risk of adverse effects. Do not combine them unless your doctor specifically advises it.
Storage Conditions
Store Cernos Gel at approximately 25°C, following the instructions on the product packaging.
Do not freeze the gel.
Protect the product from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
Keep the tube properly closed when not in use.
Keep Cernos Gel out of the sight and reach of children.
How to Use
Apply Cernos Gel exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose and frequency depend on your testosterone levels and treatment response.
Apply the prescribed amount to clean, dry and healthy skin over the shoulders or upper arms, following the product instructions.
Do not apply the gel to the penis, scrotum, chest or other areas not specified in the product instructions.
Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water immediately after applying the gel.
Allow the application site to dry before covering it with clothing.
Avoid direct skin-to-skin contact between the treated area and other people. Before anticipated skin contact, wash the application site thoroughly with soap and water.
Women and children must not come into contact with the gel or unwashed application sites because testosterone can be transferred through skin contact.
Avoid smoking and contact with open flames until the gel has dried completely, as testosterone gels may be flammable.
Follow your doctor's advice about bathing, swimming or washing the application site after application.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Cernos Gel is not intended for use by women. Testosterone can harm a developing foetus, particularly by causing the development of male characteristics in a female foetus. Pregnant women must avoid contact with the gel and with unwashed skin where it has been applied.
Breast Feeding
Cernos Gel is not intended for use by breastfeeding women. Testosterone exposure may pose a risk to a nursing infant, including through contact with treated skin. Breastfeeding women should avoid contact with the gel and seek medical advice if accidental exposure occurs.
Lungs
Inform your doctor if you have a lung condition or obstructive sleep apnoea, a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Testosterone treatment may worsen sleep apnoea in some people, particularly those with existing risk factors.
Liver
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before starting treatment. Testosterone may contribute to fluid retention, which can complicate existing liver disease. Your doctor will assess whether treatment is appropriate and arrange monitoring when needed.
Alcohol
Discuss alcohol consumption with your doctor, particularly if you have liver disease or other conditions that may affect the safety of testosterone treatment. Follow any individual restrictions recommended during treatment.
Driving
Cernos Gel is not generally expected to impair the ability to drive when used as prescribed. However, if you experience symptoms that affect concentration, alertness or your ability to drive safely, avoid driving and seek medical advice.
Side Effects
Cernos Gel may cause side effects in some people, although not everyone experiences them.
Common side effects
Acne
Redness or irritation at the application site
Skin rash
Headache
Increased blood pressure
Changes in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels
Increased red blood cell count or haemoglobin levels
Contact your doctor if these effects persist, worsen or become troublesome. Regular monitoring may be required to detect changes in blood counts, blood pressure and prostate health.
Serious side effects
Seek prompt medical attention if you experience any of the following:
Blood clots: Pain, swelling, warmth or redness in one leg, or sudden shortness of breath, may indicate a blood clot.
Significant fluid retention: New or worsening swelling of the ankles or legs requires medical assessment, particularly if you have heart, kidney or liver disease.
Worsening urinary symptoms: Difficulty passing urine or a significant change in urinary habits should be reported to your doctor.
Prolonged or painful erections: Erections that persist for an unusually long time or cause pain require urgent medical attention.
Unintentional testosterone exposure: Women or children who develop unusual hair growth, acne, changes in genital development or other hormonal changes following contact with the gel should receive medical advice promptly.
