Ortazilin 4.5gm Injection is a powerful combination of antibiotics used to treat a wide range of serious bacterial infections. It contains Piperacillin, a penicillin-type antibiotic, and Tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor that helps Piperacillin work better by fighting bacteria that resist regular antibiotics.

This medicine is commonly used in adults and adolescents to treat infections of the lungs (like pneumonia), urinary tract, abdomen, skin, and bloodstream. It’s also used in children aged 2 to 12 years for serious abdominal infections such as appendicitis and peritonitis. It is especially helpful for people with weakened immune systems or low white blood cell counts, such as cancer patients.

However, this medicine is not recommended for children under 2 years due to a lack of safety data.

Ortazilin 4.5gm Injection is prescribed to:

• Treat bacterial infections in various parts of the body (lungs, urinary tract, abdomen, skin, and blood)

• Help people with low immunity fight infections more effectively

• Treat abdominal infections in children aged 2–12 years

Piperacillin stops the growth of bacteria by blocking the formation of their protective wall. Tazobactam boosts Piperacillin’s effect by stopping enzymes (beta-lactamases) that some bacteria produce to resist antibiotics. Together, they provide protection against infection.

Ortazilin 4.5gm Injection may interact with:

• Blood thinners (like warfarin) – may increase bleeding risk

• Methotrexate – can build up in your body

• Probenecid – may raise antibiotic levels

• Diuretics or certain antibiotics – can affect kidney function

• Drugs affecting potassium – may cause imbalances

Always check with your doctor before starting or stopping any medicine during treatment.

This medicine is given as an injection or IV drip by a healthcare professional at a hospital. Do not self-inject. The dose and duration will be decided by your doctor based on your health, weight, and type of infection.

Like all medicines, this one may cause side effects. Not everyone gets them.

Common side effects:

• Nausea or vomiting

• Constipation

• Headache

• Fever

• Trouble sleeping (insomnia)

• Low potassium levels

• Abnormal kidney test results

• Breathing difficulty (bronchospasm)

Serious side effects:

• Allergic reactions like rash or swelling (anaphylaxis)

• Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)

• Bleeding issues

• Clostridium difficile–associated diarrhoea

• Anaemia or unusual bruising

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice serious symptoms like rashes, bruises, shortness of breath, weakness, or bleeding.

• Tell your doctor if you get diarrhoea during or after treatment—don’t take anti-diarrhoeal meds on your own.

• Inform your doctor if you’re allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins, or sodium, as this injection contains sodium.

• People with kidney problems need close monitoring and possible dose adjustments.

• Do not stop the medicine without your doctor’s advice, even if you feel better.

• Stay hydrated and go for regular blood tests if advised.
