Introduction
Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml is a saliva supplement used to relieve the discomfort associated with dry mouth, also called xerostomia. It contains sodium carboxymethylcellulose, sorbitol and electrolytes including potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium salts. The formulation helps retain moisture in the mouth and provides lubrication similar to some functions of natural saliva. Saliva substitutes are commonly used when reduced saliva causes dryness, difficulty speaking or swallowing, mouth discomfort or other oral symptoms.
Uses of Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml
Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml may be used for:
Dry mouth (xerostomia): Helps relieve the feeling of dryness and improves moisture in the mouth.
Reduced saliva production: Provides temporary lubrication when the mouth does not produce enough saliva.
Oral discomfort caused by dryness: Moistens the mouth and may make speaking, chewing and swallowing more comfortable.
Dry mouth associated with medical treatment: Saliva substitutes may be used when reduced salivary function occurs due to medicines, cancer treatment, radiation therapy or certain medical conditions.
Unisaliva provides symptomatic relief. It does not treat the underlying cause of reduced saliva production.
How Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml Works
Unisaliva contains sodium carboxymethylcellulose, a cellulose-based polymer that helps increase the viscosity and moisture-retaining properties of the formulation. This allows it to coat and lubricate the oral tissues.
Sorbitol helps retain moisture, while the added electrolytes, including potassium, sodium, magnesium, calcium and phosphate, contribute to the saliva-like formulation. Artificial saliva products work mainly by moistening and lubricating the mouth. They do not restore normal salivary gland function.
Interaction of Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml with Other Medicines
Unisaliva is applied locally inside the mouth and is not expected to cause significant systemic drug interactions.
However:
Tell your doctor, dentist or pharmacist about all medicines and oral products you use.
If you use several mouth or oral-care products, ask your healthcare professional about the appropriate order and frequency of use.
If dry mouth started after a prescription medicine, do not stop that medicine on your own. Discuss it with your doctor.
Storage Conditions
Store Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml according to the storage instructions printed on the product packaging.
Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.
Keep it away from excessive heat and direct sunlight.
Do not freeze the product.
Keep it out of the reach of children.
How to Use
Use Unisaliva as directed by your doctor, dentist or pharmacist.
Shake the bottle if advised on the product label.
Open the bottle and direct the spray towards the inside of the mouth.
Spray onto the areas that feel dry.
Allow the solution to spread naturally over the mouth.
It can generally be used again when the mouth feels dry, according to the recommended directions.
Do not exceed the recommended frequency of use.
Close the bottle after use and avoid sharing the spray with another person.
Saliva substitutes are generally used as needed because their effect is temporary.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
There is limited product-specific information on the use of Unisaliva during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, consult your doctor or dentist before using it.
Breast Feeding
If you are breastfeeding, consult your doctor or dentist before using Unisaliva regularly. This is particularly important if it is being used for persistent dry mouth associated with another medical condition or treatment.
Lungs
Unisaliva is a topical oral saliva substitute and is not expected to have a direct effect on lung function. Use the spray as directed and avoid inhaling the spray into the airways.
Liver
No specific liver-related precaution is expected from the topical use of this saliva substitute. Tell your doctor if you have significant liver disease or are using it alongside other treatments.
Alcohol
Unisaliva does not contain alcohol in the listed composition. However, alcohol can worsen dry mouth and may increase oral dryness. Limiting alcohol may help reduce dry mouth symptoms.
Driving
Unisaliva is not expected to affect alertness, concentration or the ability to drive. You can generally drive after using it unless your doctor has advised otherwise.
Side Effects
Unisaliva is generally well tolerated. Some people may experience:
Temporary change in taste
Mild mouth or throat irritation
Temporary unpleasant sensation in the mouth
Nausea if a large amount is accidentally swallowed
Stop using the product and speak to your doctor or dentist if you develop persistent irritation, swelling, rash or other signs of an allergic reaction.
If dry mouth continues despite using a saliva substitute, seek medical advice because persistent xerostomia may increase the risk of tooth decay, mouth infections and other oral problems.
Expert Tips
Use Unisaliva when your mouth feels dry rather than waiting for severe discomfort.
Drink water regularly unless your doctor has advised you to restrict fluids.
Maintain regular brushing and dental check-ups because dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay and oral infections.
Sugar-free chewing gum or sugar-free lozenges may help stimulate saliva in people who still have some salivary gland function.
Limit alcohol, tobacco and excessive caffeine because they can worsen oral dryness.
Do not stop a prescribed medicine that you suspect is causing dry mouth without discussing it with your doctor.
If you have persistent dry mouth, ask your doctor or dentist about the underlying cause rather than relying only on a saliva substitute.
FAQs
Q1.
What is Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml used for?
Unisaliva Mouth Spray 100ml is used to relieve symptoms of dry mouth, also called xerostomia. It moisturises and lubricates the mouth when natural saliva production is reduced.
Q2.
Does Unisaliva increase saliva production?
No. Unisaliva is a saliva substitute. It helps moisturise and lubricate the mouth but does not directly stimulate the salivary glands to produce more saliva.
Q3.
How often can I use Unisaliva Mouth Spray?
The frequency depends on how severe your dry mouth is and the directions provided by your doctor, dentist or the product label. Saliva substitutes are generally used when needed because their effect is temporary.
Q4.
Can I swallow Unisaliva after spraying it?
Unisaliva is intended for use inside the mouth, where it mixes with saliva and is naturally swallowed in small amounts. Use it only as directed and avoid deliberately swallowing large amounts.
Q5.
Can Unisaliva be used for dry mouth during cancer treatment?
Saliva substitutes may be used to relieve dry mouth associated with cancer treatment, including reduced salivary function after radiation therapy. Your oncologist or dentist can advise whether Unisaliva is suitable for you.
Q6.
Can I use Unisaliva if I wear dentures?
Saliva substitutes may help relieve oral dryness in people who wear dentures. However, if you have problems with denture fit, pain or persistent irritation, consult your dentist rather than relying only on the spray.
Q7.
Can Unisaliva cause any side effects?
Unisaliva is generally well tolerated. Mild mouth irritation or a temporary change in taste may occur. Stop using it and seek medical advice if you develop persistent irritation, swelling or other signs of an allergic reaction.
Q8.
What should I do if my dry mouth does not improve with Unisaliva?
Speak with a doctor or dentist if your dry mouth continues for several weeks or makes eating, speaking or swallowing difficult. Persistent dry mouth can have several causes and may increase the risk of tooth decay and oral infections.
Q9.
Can I use Unisaliva instead of drinking water?
No. Unisaliva provides temporary oral lubrication but does not replace the need for adequate fluid intake when you are allowed to drink normally. Follow your doctor's fluid restrictions if you have been advised to limit fluids.
