Urinary Tract Infection

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection affecting part of the urinary system, including the bladder, urethra, ureters, or kidneys. Most UTIs affect the lower urinary tract, particularly the bladder, but infections can spread to the kidneys and become more serious.

Common symptoms include a burning sensation while urinating, frequent or urgent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, and changes in urine. Where the infection occurs, how severe it is, the microorganism causing it, and the person's overall health all play a part in deciding treatment.

How Does Urinary Tract Infection Affect the Body?

A UTI usually develops when microorganisms, most often bacteria, enter the urinary tract and multiply. When the bladder is infected, it is called cystitis. An infection that reaches the kidneys is known as pyelonephritis.

A burning sensation while urinating, needing to urinate often or urgently, lower abdominal discomfort, and cloudy, strong-smelling, or bloody urine can occur with a UTI. Kidney infections can also cause fever, chills, back or side pain, nausea, or vomiting.

Bacterial UTIs are commonly treated with antibiotics. The medicine used depends on the infection, where it is located, the suspected bacteria, previous infections, and local antibiotic resistance. More serious infections may need hospital treatment and antibiotics given through a vein.
