Megecet Oral Suspension is used for:

• Loss of appetite: Megestrol can increase appetite in people with certain chronic illnesses.

• Significant weight loss: It may be prescribed to help improve appetite and promote weight gain in people who have experienced substantial, unintended weight loss.

• Cancer-associated appetite loss: Megestrol may be used in some patients with advanced cancer who have significant loss of appetite and weight.

• AIDS-associated anorexia or cachexia: Megestrol acetate oral suspension has an established indication for treating anorexia, cachexia or significant unexplained weight loss in patients with AIDS.

Megecet contains Megestrol, which is a progestin, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone.

Megestrol can increase appetite and food intake. The exact mechanism responsible for its appetite-stimulating effect is not fully understood. Increased appetite can help some people with significant illness-related weight loss eat more and gain weight.

Tell your doctor about all prescription medicines, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements you take before starting Megecet.

• Diabetes medicines: Megestrol can affect blood glucose levels. People with diabetes may need closer monitoring and adjustment of their diabetes medicines.

• Corticosteroids: Using Megestrol with corticosteroids may increase the risk of adrenal suppression and other corticosteroid-related effects.

• Warfarin and other anticoagulants: Tell your doctor if you take blood-thinning medicines so they can monitor your treatment appropriately.

• Other hormonal medicines: Tell your doctor about other hormone-based medicines because they may affect your treatment plan.

• Medicines affecting adrenal function: Megestrol can affect adrenal function, particularly with prolonged use, so your doctor should know about medicines that also affect the adrenal glands.

• Store Megecet according to the storage instructions given on the product packaging.

• Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

• Protect the suspension from excessive heat and direct sunlight.

• Do not use the medicine after the expiry date printed on the pack.

• Keep it out of the reach of children.

Take Megecet by mouth exactly as your doctor prescribed.

• Shake the bottle well before each use to mix the medicine evenly.

• Measure the prescribed amount using an appropriate measuring device. Do not use a household spoon.

• Take the medicine at the dose and frequency your doctor recommends.

• Do not take more than the prescribed amount even if your appetite does not improve immediately.

Serious side effects

Seek medical attention if you develop:

• Adrenal suppression: Severe weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, low blood pressure or fainting can occur if the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones.

• High blood sugar: Report increased thirst, frequent urination, unusual tiredness, or blurred vision, particularly if you have diabetes.

• Severe allergic reaction: Facial swelling, difficulty breathing, widespread rash or fainting requires immediate medical attention.

Long-term or high-dose Megestrol treatment can suppress adrenal function, and adrenal insufficiency can occur after stopping treatment as well.
