Pentasa 1gm Suppository contains mesalazine. It is used to treat ulcerative proctitis. Ulcerative proctitis is a mild form of ulcerative colitis in which the lining of the rectum (passage) becomes inflamed, resulting in rectal bleeding and pain. You should not take this suppository if you have severe kidney or liver disorders or if you are allergic to aspirin. This medicine is not recommended in children.
Talk to your doctor if you have lung problems, in particular, asthma, before taking Pentasa 1gm Suppository. Kidney stones can develop with the use of this medicine. Drink sufficient amount of liquid during the treatment. Stop using this medicine if you suddenly develop abdominal cramps, pain, severe headache, rash, and fever, and seek medical advice immediately.

How Pentasa 1gm Suppository works:
It inhibits cyclooxygenase enzyme and prostaglandin (substances responsible for inflammation) production and reduces inflammation.

How to use Pentasa 1gm Suppository:
Always take Pentasa 1gm Suppository exactly as your doctor has told you. The suppository must be inserted into the back passage only. It is intended to be left in place for as long as possible, so it will best if inserted before going to sleep. Empty your bowels before inserting the suppository.
Insertion will be easier if you moisten the suppository with water first. Lie down on one side and raise the other knee. Insert the suppository softly and fully into the back passage and remain still for few minutes. Drink plenty of fluids during the treatment with this medicine.

Breastfeeding:
Inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before taking Pentasa 1gm Suppository. It will be given to you if clearly needed.
Liver:
Pentasa 1gm Suppository is not recommended for patients with severe liver disorders. You need to tell your doctor if you have any liver disorders before taking this medicine.
Kidney:
Pentasa 1gm Suppository is not recommended for patients with severe kidney disorders. You need to tell your doctor if you have any kidney disorders before taking this medicine.
Others:

Side effects are unwanted symptoms caused by medicines. Even though all medicines cause side effects, not everyone gets them.
