Introduction
Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection contains Semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is supplied as a multi-dose disposable pen containing Semaglutide 9.6 mg/3 mL, equivalent to 3.2 mg/mL. Each pen provides four doses of 2.4 mg for once-weekly subcutaneous use. The product is manufactured and marketed by Alkem Laboratories Ltd.
Semaglutide is used along with diet and exercise for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and chronic weight management, as prescribed by a doctor. The 2.4 mg strength is a higher-dose Semaglutide presentation and should only be used according to the prescribed treatment plan.
Uses of Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection
Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection may be prescribed for:
Chronic weight management: It may be used with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity in eligible adults who need long-term weight management.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Semaglutide may be prescribed as part of a treatment plan to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes.
The appropriate dose and duration depend on the individual's medical condition and treatment response. Do not start or change the dose without medical advice.
How Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection works
Semaglutide acts similarly to a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1. It helps the pancreas release insulin when blood glucose levels are elevated and reduces the release of glucagon, which helps lower blood glucose.
It also slows the movement of food through the stomach and acts on areas of the brain involved in appetite regulation. These effects can help increase fullness, reduce food intake, and support weight loss when used with diet and physical activity.
Interactions of Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection with other medicines
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take before starting Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection.
Insulin and sulfonylureas: Using Semaglutide with these medicines may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Your doctor may adjust their dose.
Medicines taken by mouth: Semaglutide can delay gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of some oral medicines.
Other GLP-1 receptor agonists: Do not use Semaglutide with another Semaglutide-containing medicine or another GLP-1 receptor agonist unless specifically advised by your doctor.
Medicines for diabetes: Tell your doctor about all diabetes medicines you use so your treatment can be adjusted safely.
Storage Conditions
Store the unopened pen in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
Do not freeze.
Keep the pen away from direct light.
Keep out of reach of children.
Follow the storage instructions printed on the product packaging for the pen after first use.
The Semasize Plus 2.4mg packaging specifies refrigeration at 2°C to 8°C and states that the product should not be frozen.
How to Use
Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection is given under the skin once a week, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites when possible.
The product is supplied as a multi-dose disposable pen. The pack contains one pen, four needles, and four alcohol swabs, with one pen providing four doses of 2.4 mg.
Your doctor or healthcare professional should show you how to use the pen before you administer your first dose. Do not share the pen or needles with another person, even if the needle has been changed.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Semaglutide should not be used during pregnancy unless specifically advised by a doctor. If you become pregnant while using it, contact your doctor promptly. Women planning pregnancy should discuss treatment with their doctor beforehand.
Breast Feeding
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection. Your doctor will decide whether treatment should be continued based on the expected benefits and potential risks.
Lungs
No specific lung-related precautions are established for routine use. Tell your doctor if you have a significant respiratory condition or develop severe or unusual breathing symptoms during treatment.
Liver
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before starting treatment. Your doctor may consider your liver condition when deciding whether Semaglutide is appropriate for you.
Alcohol
Alcohol may affect blood glucose control and can worsen some gastrointestinal symptoms. If you have diabetes, discuss alcohol consumption with your doctor, particularly if you also use insulin or medicines that can cause low blood sugar.
Driving
Semaglutide itself does not usually affect the ability to drive. However, dizziness or low blood sugar can occur, particularly when Semaglutide is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea. Do not drive if you experience symptoms that affect your concentration or alertness.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Semasize Plus 2.4mg Pen Injection include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Decreased appetite
Indigestion
Headache
Fatigue
These effects are more likely when treatment is started or the dose is increased and may improve as the body adjusts.
Seek medical attention if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to the back, as this may indicate pancreatitis. People with diabetes who have a history of diabetic retinopathy should also be monitored for worsening eye-related complications.
