Introduction

Tobacin Injection 2ml is a versatile antibiotic containing tobramycin, an aminoglycoside class molecule known for its broad-spectrum activity against bacterial infections. This medication is primarily used to treat serious bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and eye infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Tobramycin works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby halting their growth and spread.

Its therapeutic applications extend to both systemic and localised infections, making it a vital treatment option in critical care settings. While highly effective, Tobacin Injection 2ml must be used under medical supervision due to potential safety concerns, including nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to aminoglycosides or severe renal impairment. Always consult a healthcare provider before initiating treatment to ensure safe and effective use. Tobacin Injection 2ml price varies by retailer and location.

Uses

Tobacin Injection 2ml Uses for the treatment of the following:

  • Severe systemic infections, including sepsis and bacteremia

  • Lower respiratory tract infections

  • Complicated urinary tract infections

  • Bacterial eye infections (ophthalmic formulations)

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis patients

How Tobacin Injection 2ml Works

Tobacin Injection 2ml acts by binding to bacterial ribosomes, specifically the 30S subunit, disrupting protein synthesis. This mechanism stops bacterial growth and leads to cell death, effectively clearing the infection. Its high potency against Gram-negative bacteria and limited resistance make it a reliable choice for treating severe infections. Tobramycin is also effective in reducing bacterial load in localised infections, such as lung and eye infections.

Interaction of Tobacin Injection 2ml with other drugs

  1. Loop Diuretics (Life-threatening)
Combining Tobacin Injection with loop diuretics such as furosemide can sharply increase the risk of irreversible hearing damage and kidney injury. This combination should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

  2. Other Aminoglycosides (Severe)
Using Tobacin with gentamicin, amikacin, or other aminoglycosides can greatly raise the chances of ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Doctors usually avoid giving two aminoglycosides together.

  3. Vancomycin (Severe)
Vancomycin may intensify Tobacin’s harmful effects on the kidneys. If both are required, strict renal monitoring is essential.

  4. Potent Nephrotoxic Medicines (Moderate)
Drugs like amphotericin B, cisplatin, or certain antivirals can increase kidney strain when taken with Tobacin. Dose adjustments and frequent renal tests are recommended.

  5. Neuromuscular Blocking Agents (Moderate)
These medicines may interact with Tobacin and prolong muscle weakness. Caution is needed during surgery or when using agents that affect neuromuscular transmission

Storage Conditions

  • Keep below 25°C in a dry place away from sunlight.

  • Do not freeze.

  • Take as soon as remembered unless it’s close to the next dose. Do not double the dose.

How to take Tobacin Injection 2ml

Tobacin Injection 2ml, USP is supplied as a dry powder in a bulk package vial. The contents must be reconstituted with 30 mL of Sterile Water for Injection, USP, to prepare a solution containing 40 mg/mL of tobramycin. This solution must be further diluted prior to intravenous (IV) administration.

For adults, the recommended tobacin Injection 2ml dosages are as follows:

  • Serious infections: 3 mg/kg/day divided into three equal doses (1 mg/kg every 8 hours).

  • Life-threatening infections: Up to 5 mg/kg/day divided into three or four doses.

Specific dosage recommendations are provided for pediatric patients, patients with cystic fibrosis, renal impairment, and obese patients. It is crucial to adhere to prescribing guidelines and consult full prescribing information for precise adjustments. Tobramycin is not intended for direct infusion in its bulk package form and must be dispensed through a pharmacy admixture program.
