Introduction

Uniotide 50mcg Injection is a prescription medicine that contains octreotide, a man-made version of a natural hormone called somatostatin. It helps control the release of certain hormones in the body and is mainly used to treat conditions such as acromegaly (a disorder in which the body produces too much growth hormone), symptoms caused by rare digestive system tumours (such as carcinoid tumours and VIPomas), and complications after pancreas surgery.

It’s also used to manage bleeding from veins in the food pipe in people with chronic liver disease and to treat pituitary tumours that produce too much thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), especially when other treatments haven’t worked. This injection is usually given under the skin, into a muscle, or into a vein, depending on your condition, and should be used only under a doctor's guidance.

Uses

  • Treats acromegaly

  • Controls symptoms from certain digestive tract tumours

  • Prevents issues after pancreatic surgery

  • Helps treat pituitary tumours that produce too much TSH

How Uniotide 50mcg Injection works

Uniotide works by mimicking somatostatin, which naturally slows down the release of certain hormones in the body. It lowers the levels of growth hormone and other substances that can cause symptoms in people with hormone-related disorders.

Interaction of Uniotide 50mcg Injection with other drugs

Taking Uniotide 50 mcg Injection (octreotide) with any of the following medicines can change the effects of either medicine and may increase the risk of side effects.

  1. Insulin and other antidiabetic medicines (Injection/Oral Route) Life-threatening
Use only under strict medical supervision.
Octreotide can alter blood sugar levels and may increase the risk of severe hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia. Dose adjustment of antidiabetic medicines may be required.

  2. Beta blockers such as Atenolol or Metoprolol (Oral Route) Moderate
    Use with caution.
Concomitant use may slow the heart rate further and increase the risk of bradycardia.

  3. Calcium channel blockers such as Verapamil or Diltiazem (Oral Route) Moderate
    Use under medical supervision.
Taking these medicines together may increase the risk of a slow heart rate or low blood pressure.

  4. Cyclosporine (Oral Route) Moderate
    Avoid or monitor closely.
Octreotide may reduce cyclosporine absorption and decrease its effectiveness.

  5. Bromocriptine (Oral Route) Moderate
    Use with caution.
Octreotide may increase bromocriptine levels in the blood, enhancing its effects and side effects.

  6. Medicines that affect heart rhythm (Oral/Injection Route) Moderate
    Use carefully.
Concomitant use may increase the risk of heart rhythm disturbances.

Storage conditions
