Introduction

Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection contains Leuprolide Acetate, a hormonal medicine used to treat hormone-sensitive conditions. It belongs to a group of medicines called gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists. A healthcare professional gives Luproson as a depot injection, allowing the medicine to be released gradually over time.

Leuprolide reduces the production of sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen. It is used when lowering these hormones can slow disease progression or reduce symptoms.

Uses of Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection

Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection may be used for:

  • Prostate cancer: It is used as hormone therapy for advanced or hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. Lowering testosterone can slow the growth of prostate cancer cells.

  • Endometriosis: It may reduce estrogen stimulation and relieve symptoms associated with endometriosis.

  • Uterine fibroids: It may be used to reduce hormone stimulation of fibroids and help improve symptoms.

  • Central precocious puberty: Leuprolide may be used to delay abnormally early sexual development when prescribed for this purpose.

How Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection Works

Luproson contains Leuprolide Acetate, a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).

At the beginning of treatment, leuprolide can briefly increase the release of reproductive hormones. With continued treatment, persistent stimulation of GnRH receptors causes the pituitary gland to reduce the release of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This lowers testosterone in men and estrogen production in women.

In prostate cancer, the reduction in testosterone can slow the growth of hormone-dependent cancer cells. In conditions such as endometriosis and uterine fibroids, the reduction in estrogen can decrease hormone-related stimulation.

Interaction of Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection with Other Medicines

Tell your doctor about all medicines, vitamins and supplements you take before receiving Luproson.

  • Medicines affecting heart rhythm: Leuprolide may affect the QT interval in some patients. Tell your doctor if you take medicines that can prolong the QT interval.

  • Medicines for diabetes: Hormone changes caused by androgen deprivation may affect blood glucose control. People taking medicines for diabetes may require closer monitoring.

  • Blood-thinning medicines: Tell your doctor if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet medicines, particularly before an intramuscular injection.

  • Other hormonal medicines: Tell your doctor about any hormone-based treatment you are receiving so that your overall treatment can be assessed.

  • Medicines used for cancer: Your doctor will review your complete cancer treatment before combining Luproson with other anticancer medicines.

Do not start or stop any medicine without discussing it with your doctor.

Storage Conditions

  • Store Luproson in refrigerated storage at 2°C to 8°C.

  • Protect the medicine from unsuitable temperatures and direct light.

  • Do not use the product after the expiry date printed on the pack.

  • The depot preparation should be prepared and administered according to the manufacturer's instructions.

  • Keep it out of the reach of children.

How to Use

Luproson 11.25mg Depot Injection should be administered by a doctor or nurse. It is not intended for self-administration.

The depot formulation is given as an injection into the muscle. The medicine is formulated to release Leuprolide gradually over an extended period.

The 11.25 mg depot strength is commonly used as a three-month formulation. The exact schedule depends on the condition being treated and the product-specific prescribing instructions. Do not change the dose or injection schedule yourself.

  • Injection-site pain

Serious side effects

Seek medical attention if you develop:

Expert Tips

  • Luproson should be administered only by a trained healthcare professional.

  • Keep your scheduled injections because the depot formulation is designed to maintain hormone suppression over a defined period.

  • If you are being treated for prostate cancer, symptoms can temporarily worsen after starting treatment because of the initial hormone surge.

  • Tell your doctor if you develop new bone pain, weakness, numbness or difficulty passing urine.

  • Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, heart disease, a history of abnormal heart rhythm or osteoporosis.

  • Women who could become pregnant should discuss contraception with their doctor.

  • Do not stop treatment simply because symptoms improve. Continue treatment according to your doctor's plan.
