Luproson 22.5mg Depot Injection is used for:

• Advanced prostate cancer: It is used as hormone therapy for advanced prostate cancer where reducing testosterone can slow the growth of cancer cells.

• Hormone suppression in prostate cancer: Leuprolide may be continued as part of long-term androgen deprivation treatment according to the patient's cancer treatment plan

Luproson contains Leuprolide Acetate, a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).

When treatment begins, leuprolide can temporarily increase testosterone levels. With continued administration, persistent stimulation of GnRH receptors causes the pituitary gland to reduce luteinising hormone (LH) release. This reduces testosterone production by the testes.

Lower testosterone reduces hormonal stimulation of prostate cancer cells and can slow the progression of hormone-dependent prostate cancer.

Serious side effects

• Urinary obstruction: Difficulty passing urine or inability to urinate should be reported immediately.

• Severe allergic reaction: Facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread rash or fainting requires immediate medical attention.

• Heart rhythm problems: Fainting, severe dizziness or an irregular heartbeat should be assessed urgently.

• Luproson should be administered only by a trained healthcare professional.

• Keep your scheduled injections because the depot formulation is designed to provide continuous hormone suppression.

• Do not expect testosterone levels to fall immediately after the first injection. An initial hormone surge can occur.

• Tell your doctor immediately if you develop severe or worsening bone pain, weakness, numbness or difficulty passing urine.

• Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, cardiovascular disease, abnormal heart rhythm or osteoporosis.

• Your doctor may monitor testosterone, PSA, blood glucose and other parameters during treatment.

• Do not stop treatment without discussing it with your oncologist.
