Introduction
Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) lists semaglutide injection for adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes as an adjunct to diet and exercise, including as monotherapy when metformin is inappropriate and in combination with other medicines for diabetes.
Uses of Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection
Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection is used to:
Improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Support diabetes management along with a suitable diet and regular physical activity.
Be used alone when metformin is considered inappropriate because of intolerance or contraindications.
Be used with other medicines for diabetes when additional blood sugar control is required.
How Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection works
Semaglutide works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone involved in blood glucose regulation. It increases insulin release when blood glucose levels are elevated and reduces glucagon secretion. It also slows gastric emptying, which can affect the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream.
Interactions of Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection with other medicines
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take before using Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection.
Insulin and sulfonylureas: Using semaglutide with insulin or a sulfonylurea may increase the risk of hypoglycaemia. Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of the other medicine.
Other semaglutide-containing medicines: Do not use Semaneo with another medicine containing semaglutide unless specifically advised by your doctor.
Other GLP-1 receptor agonists: Combining semaglutide with another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.
Oral medicines: Semaglutide delays gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of some medicines taken by mouth. Tell your doctor about all oral medicines you use.
Storage Conditions
Store Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
Do not freeze the medicine.
Keep it away from the cooling element of the refrigerator.
Protect the pen from light by keeping the pen cap on when it is not in use.
Keep it out of the reach of children.
For storage after first use, follow the instructions supplied with the specific Semaneo pen presentation.
How to Use
Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection is administered under the skin once a week. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. It may be administered at any time of day, with or without food. Try to use it on the same day each week.
Semaglutide treatment is generally started at a lower dose and increased gradually. The 0.5mg dose is typically reached after at least four weeks on the 0.25mg once-weekly dose. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration of treatment.
Inspect the solution before use. It should be clear and colourless. Do not use the medicine if you notice particles or an unusual change in appearance.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Semaneo 0.5mg Pen Injection should not be used during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy or become pregnant while using semaglutide, speak to your doctor. Semaglutide should generally be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Breast Feeding
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using Semaneo. Your doctor will assess whether treatment is appropriate for you.
Lungs
Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure involving general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Semaglutide delays gastric emptying and may increase the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs during such procedures.
Liver
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before starting Semaneo. Your doctor will assess your condition and determine whether the medicine is suitable for you.
Alcohol
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while using Semaneo. Alcohol can affect blood glucose control and may worsen symptoms such as nausea or vomiting.
Driving
Semaneo does not usually affect your ability to drive. However, low blood sugar can occur when semaglutide is used with insulin or sulfonylureas. If you experience symptoms of hypoglycaemia, such as dizziness, sweating, confusion or weakness, avoid driving until your blood sugar has returned to a safe level.
Side Effects
Common side effects of semaglutide include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
These effects may be more noticeable when treatment is started or the dose is increased and may improve as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Contact your doctor if you experience severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, symptoms of dehydration, changes in vision or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Semaglutide can also be associated with pancreatitis, gallbladder problems and diabetic retinopathy complications.
