Introduction
Semasize 0.5 mg is a single-use prefilled syringe containing semaglutide 0.5 mg in 0.38 mL. It is supplied as a solution for subcutaneous injection and is intended for use under medical supervision.
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Alkem's semaglutide prefilled syringe range is approved in India for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
Uses of Semasize 0.5 mg
Semasize 0.5 mg may be used for:
Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus along with diet and exercise
Management of obesity as an adjunct to diet and exercise
The doctor decides the appropriate indication, dose and duration of treatment based on your medical condition.
How Semasize 0.5 mg Works
Semasize 0.5 mg contains semaglutide, which mimics the action of the naturally occurring hormone GLP-1. It stimulates insulin release when blood glucose levels are elevated and reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood glucose.
Semaglutide also slows the movement of food through the stomach and can reduce appetite. These effects help improve blood glucose control and support weight reduction when used along with appropriate diet and exercise.
Interactions of Semasize 0.5 mg with Other Medicines
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take before starting Semasize 0.5 mg.
Insulin or sulfonylureas: Using semaglutide with these medicines can increase the risk of low blood sugar. Your doctor may adjust their dose.
Oral medicines: Semaglutide can delay gastric emptying and may affect the rate at which some oral medicines are absorbed.
Warfarin or other coumarin medicines: More frequent monitoring of INR may be required when semaglutide treatment is started.
Other semaglutide-containing medicines or GLP-1 receptor agonists: These should not be used together unless specifically directed by your doctor.
Storage Conditions
Store Semasize 0.5 mg in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
Do not freeze the medicine.
Keep it out of reach of children.
Keep the prefilled syringe in its original packaging and protect it from light.
Use the syringe only as instructed by your doctor.
How to Use
Semasize 0.5 mg is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection).
It is generally administered once a week, on the same day each week, as directed by your doctor.
It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. Avoid injecting into a vein or muscle.
The prefilled syringe is single-use. Do not reuse or share it with another person.
Use the dose prescribed by your doctor. Do not change the dose or frequency on your own.
The pack contains one prefilled syringe and one alcohol swab.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Semaglutide should not be used during pregnancy. If you become pregnant while using Semasize, contact your doctor. Semaglutide should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Breast Feeding
Semaglutide is not recommended during breastfeeding because a risk to the breastfed infant cannot be excluded.
Lungs
Tell your doctor if you have any breathing-related medical conditions or are undergoing treatment for a lung condition before using Semasize.
Liver
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease before starting treatment. Your doctor will determine whether Semasize is appropriate for you.
Alcohol
Alcohol may worsen gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. It may also make blood glucose control more difficult, particularly when Semasize is used with other medicines that lower blood glucose.
Driving
Semaglutide itself has no or negligible effect on the ability to drive. However, if it is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar can occur and may affect your ability to drive.
Side Effects
Semasize 0.5 mg may cause gastrointestinal side effects, particularly when treatment is started or the dose is increased.
Common side effects
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
Indigestion
Decreased appetite
Headache
Dizziness

Expert Tips
Use Semasize exactly as prescribed and do not change your dose without medical advice.
Try to use your injection on the same day each week.

Do not reuse or share the prefilled syringe.
Drink enough fluids, particularly if you experience vomiting or diarrhoea.
Tell your doctor if you are taking insulin or a sulfonylurea because your risk of low blood sugar may be higher.
