Introduction
Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The Indian regulatory record for Intas lists semaglutide 1.34 mg/mL in a 4 mg/3 mL prefilled pen for this indication.
According to the product packaging, Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection contains semaglutide 1.34 mg/mL and is supplied as a 3 mL prefilled pen capable of delivering four 1 mg doses. Each pen is supplied with five pen needles and five alcohol swabs. The pack also identifies Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. as the manufacturer.
Uses of Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection
Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Semaglutide may be used alone when metformin-based treatment is not suitable because of intolerance or contraindications, or together with other medicines used to treat diabetes, as prescribed by the doctor.
How Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection works
Semaglutide works by mimicking the action of GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone involved in blood glucose regulation. It increases insulin release when blood glucose levels are elevated, reduces glucagon secretion and slows stomach emptying. These effects help lower blood glucose levels and improve glycaemic control.
Interactions of Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection with other medicines
Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take before starting Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection.
Insulin and sulfonylureas: Using semaglutide with these medicines may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Your doctor may adjust the dose of the other medicine.
Other semaglutide-containing medicines: Do not use Semaneo with another medicine containing semaglutide unless specifically prescribed.
Other GLP-1 receptor agonists: Combining Semaneo with another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.
Oral medicines: Semaglutide delays gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of some medicines taken by mouth. Tell your doctor about medicines that require careful monitoring.
Storage Conditions
Store Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
Do not freeze the pen.
Keep it away from the cooling element of the refrigerator.
Keep the pen cap on when the pen is not being used to protect it from light.
After first use, store the pen below 30°C or in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C, as stated on the product packaging.
Discard the pen 6 weeks after first use, even if some solution remains.
Keep it out of the reach of children.
How to Use
Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection is administered under the skin once a week. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. It may be administered at any time of day, with or without food. Use it on the same day each week as advised by your doctor.
The 1mg dose is generally reached after treatment has been started at a lower dose and increased gradually. Do not change the dose or frequency without medical advice.
The pen should be inspected before use. Do not use it if the solution is not clear and colourless or if you notice particles in it.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Semaneo 1mg Pen Injection should not be used during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor about stopping treatment. Semaglutide should generally be discontinued at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy because it remains in the body for an extended period.
Breast Feeding
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using Semaneo. There is limited information about the presence of semaglutide in human milk and its effects on a breastfed infant. Your doctor will decide whether treatment is appropriate.
Lungs
Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Semaglutide delays stomach emptying, which may increase the risk of aspiration during such procedures.
Liver
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before starting Semaneo. Your doctor will determine whether the medicine is appropriate for you.
Alcohol
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while using Semaneo. Alcohol may affect blood glucose control and can worsen gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
Driving
Semaneo does not usually affect the ability to drive. However, if it is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea, low blood sugar may occur and can affect concentration and driving ability. Do not drive if you develop symptoms of hypoglycaemia.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Semaglutide include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
These effects are more likely during dose escalation and may reduce as the body adjusts to treatment.
Seek medical attention if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, significant changes in vision or symptoms of severe dehydration. Semaglutide is also associated with important risks including pancreatitis, diabetic retinopathy complications and gallbladder problems.
Expert Tips

Drink enough fluids, particularly if vomiting or diarrhoea occurs.
Monitor your blood glucose as advised by your doctor.
Tell your doctor that you use Semaneo before undergoing surgery or deep sedation.
Do not share your pen with another person, even if the needle has been changed.
