Introduction
Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection contains semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Semaglutide is also used in specific approved formulations for weight management, but the indication should be based on the prescribing information for the particular product.
Semaneo 0.25mg is supplied as a prefilled pen containing 1 mg of semaglutide in 1.5 mL. The 0.25mg dose is generally used at the beginning of treatment, allowing the body to adjust to semaglutide before the dose is increased.
Uses of Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection
Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection is used along with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The 0.25mg dose is generally used as the initial dose of semaglutide treatment rather than as a maintenance dose. The dose may be increased gradually according to the treatment plan prescribed by the doctor.
How Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection works
Semaglutide acts like GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate blood glucose levels. It increases insulin release when blood glucose is high and reduces the release of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood glucose.
It also slows gastric emptying, which can reduce the rate at which glucose enters the bloodstream after meals. Together, these actions help improve blood sugar control.
Interactions of Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection with other medicines
Tell your doctor about all medicines you take before using Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection.
Insulin and sulfonylureas: Semaglutide can increase the risk of low blood sugar when used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Your doctor may adjust the dose of these medicines.
Other semaglutide-containing medicines: Do not use Semaneo with another medicine containing semaglutide.
Other GLP-1 receptor agonists: Combining Semaneo with another GLP-1 receptor agonist is not recommended.
Oral medicines: Semaglutide slows gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of some medicines taken by mouth. Tell your doctor about medicines that require close monitoring.
Storage Conditions
Store Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C.
Do not freeze the pen.
Keep it away from the cooling element of the refrigerator.
Protect the pen from light.
Keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not use the medicine if it has been frozen or if the solution appears abnormal.
How to Use
Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection is administered under the skin once a week. It can be injected into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. It can be used at any time of day, with or without food. Try to administer it on the same day each week.
The usual starting dose of semaglutide is 0.25mg once weekly. After four weeks, the dose is generally increased to 0.5mg once weekly if prescribed by the doctor. The gradual increase helps improve gastrointestinal tolerability. Do not change the dose or injection schedule without medical advice.
Before each injection, check the solution through the pen window. It should be clear and colourless. Do not use the pen if the solution is cloudy, coloured or contains particles.
Safety Advice
Pregnancy
Semaneo 0.25mg Pen Injection should not be used during pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy, speak to your doctor about stopping treatment. Semaglutide should generally be discontinued at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy.
Breast Feeding
Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using Semaneo. Your doctor will decide whether treatment should be continued based on your individual circumstances.
Lungs
Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure requiring general anaesthesia or deep sedation. Semaglutide delays gastric emptying, which may increase the risk of stomach contents entering the lungs during such procedures.
Liver
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease before starting Semaneo. Your doctor will assess your condition and determine whether the medicine is appropriate for you.
Alcohol
Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while using Semaneo. Alcohol can affect blood glucose control and may worsen gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.
Driving
Semaneo does not usually affect your ability to drive. However, low blood sugar can occur when it is used with insulin or a sulfonylurea. If you experience dizziness, sweating, weakness or confusion, check your blood glucose and avoid driving until you feel well.
Side Effects
The most common side effects of semaglutide include:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Constipation
Abdominal pain
These effects are particularly common when treatment is started or the dose is increased and often become less troublesome as the body adjusts to the medicine.
Contact your doctor if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, changes in vision or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction. Semaglutide can also cause or worsen certain complications involving the pancreas, gallbladder, kidneys and eyes.
